Tom White - Phone Box (London)
Acrylic on Canvas
Framed
116 x 77 cm
This is a rare summer painting of a London view that Tom has revisited on many occasions
in winter light. As usual we have a very strong composition taking the viewer’s eye along
the Embankment cycle lane towards Elizabeth Tower.
Elizabeth Tower is the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster which contains the Great
Bell, nicknamed Big Ben and is probably the most iconic building in London. However,
dominating the painting in the foreground is another icon, namely the red phone box.
In the words of the artist:
“I tend not to paint the iconic buildings in any city, however this particular view is hard to
ignore. I love the deep perspective offered by the bike lane. This is the reason I ‘m drawn
to road markings, in particular yellow lines, which appear in many of my paintings. “ Tom White
