Sophie Howard
Sophie makes sculpture. She explores the human body, its form, movement, spirit and the rapport people have with each other, and other creatures. The sculpture is not useful, but seeks to be essential.
As well as making one off pieces, her sculpture is cast into clay for firing, into bronze resin, stone and bronze. She also works with willow and found materials. Seeking to find her own voice has lead her to working in series, making sets of pieces which explore themes and materials, movement and stillness, bodies and patterns.
In addition to producing sculpture which is available in galleries across the UK, Sophie has taught art for twenty years, and been a business adviser to people in the creative industries in Bristol, where she lives. Sophie has completed commissions for private and corporate customers.
Born in Dorset in 1957, and growing up in northern England, Sophie studied at Winchester School of Art.
She lived in London, returning to the West Country in 1987.
