Shiva Basu
Shiva Basu was born in West London in the year 2000 but has lived in the
Bristol area since 2015. Basu gained a First in Fine Art (BA) from
Nottingham Trent University in 2023. Shiva Basu’s current practice uses
compositions based on scenes from the arrangement of childhood animal
toys placed on the miniature dais. These work as sculptural pieces in
their own right, and as 2D work in photography and painting. Basu also
works and collaborates with her sister who is a photographer, staging
shoots together to paint from. In the studio, Basu spends a lot of time
experimenting. Trying different assemblages of chosen artifacts. How Basu comes to make a piece is based on these combinations of objects. We often try to define ourselves by combining the objects around us. By building these compositions the artist tries to create a material fact to start from. The artist hopes this achieves a degree of melodrama to appeal to the emotions of the viewer and plays with the counterpoint of grand monuments of power and religion with children's playthings and animals.
