Lilia Umaña-Clarke was born in Colombia and originally trained as an architect. She moved to England in 1979 and gained a BA in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire. She now works from her studio in Hackney, London.
Lilia is inspired by use of human and animal imagery in the in ancient South American civilisations. Her work combines geometric abstraction with expressive figurative sculpture. The stoneware ceramic pieces are given their unique texture by the use of dry glazes and oxides.
