Brian Korteling

Inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi where bowls are broken and mended with dusted gold cracks, Brian has adapted this ancient technique to add and an additional layer of meaning and metaphor to his paintings. As a philosophy, Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. In these pieces there is an act of destruction and then rebirth as the image is repaired, often deliberately distorted or misaligned to create a sense of unease or a feeling of uncanny.
